Story time: The Worst High Blood Sugar I've Had in a While

Story time: The Worst High Blood Sugar I've Had in a While

May 30, 2023
Welcome to this week’s podcast! Today I’m getting vulnerable with you again and sharing one of the worst high blood sugar days that I've had in a while. In this story-time style episode, I will debrief you on exactly what happened and how Trista, one of the wonderful coaches at Risely, helped me realize that it wasn’t just ONE issue but a combination of things that caused such high blood sugars. Whether intentional or unintentional, as T1Ds we are used to hiding the daily ups and downs that we experience from the people around us. This is part of why it can feel like diabetes is such an invisible condition because there's so much that we do daily that no one knows about. My hope is that you can take the lessons from this podcast and apply them to your own life with diabetes, so you feel less alone and more equipped to manage your lows. Nina Gelbke on Blood Sugar Perfectionism, Plant Based Nutrition, and Endurance Swimming with T1D

Nina Gelbke on Blood Sugar Perfectionism, Plant Based Nutrition, and Endurance Swimming with T1D

May 23, 2023
We have our first ever Australian T1D guest today, Nina Gelbke. Nina developed a passion for nutrition after being diagnosed at age 9 and after struggling with an eating disorder throughout highschool. She is an accredited nutritionist and sports nutritionist (BHSc), CrossFit trainer, and competitive athlete. Her aim as a plant-based nutritionist and fitness coach is to educate, support and empower her clients with food. In this episode we talk about... Her struggle with blood sugar perfectionism - what helped her change her mindset and how it’s still a work in progress The value of eating not just for insulin sensitivity, but also for happiness  Nina’s exact approach to prepare for a 4k ocean swim (and how she didn’t go low during it!)  The importance of trial and error for learning how to fuel your body for different activities I do want to give a trigger warning that we touch on diets and disordered eating. So please skip this if you are not in a good place to explore these topics. Hit the subscribe button and rate and review to help this podcast rise! The Shocking News of Getting Discharged from the Airforce because of T1D and What Came Next with Neil Greathouse

May 16, 2023
I cannot wait for you to listen to today’s episode with special guest, Neil Greathouse! Neil is a board-certified diabetes educator, director of the Bike Beyond documentary, filmmaker, and educator who provides daily videos about T1D through his Instagram @thebetes . He has also led seven mission trips to remote cities in Peru to provide diabetes supplies and education to the people there. He wasn’t always so active in the diabetes realm, though. In 1992, after spending four years, seven months, and 11 days in training for the United States Air Force, Neil was diagnosed with type one diabetes and discharged from the military. In this episode, we discuss... How Neil’s denial that something was wrong with his body during Air Force training led him to go blind for a week and have a dangerously high blood sugar reading of 1800.  How his rock bottom moment led to him reclaiming ownership of his diabetes. How he manages his diabetes while going on trips to remote places in the world  How important it is to feel seen and heard as a type one  How Neil works to spread positivity online in the diabetes space  Follow Neil on Instagram HERE .
